Kashmir shuts against mass arrests, restrictions imposed in Srinagar areas

Srinagar, Feb 24 (KNS): A complete shutdown was on Sunday observed across the Valley while as restrictions were imposed in Srinagar areas today to thwart any protest against the arrests of Jamaat and Hurriyat leaders on Friday night.
The shutdown was called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik ahead of hearing on Article 35-A.
All the shops, business establishments and petrol pumps were closed while as traffic was also off the roads throughout the day.
Authorities had imposed restrictions in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, M R Gunj, Rainawari, Nowhatta and Safa Kadal.
Eyewitnesses told KNS thta a large contingent of police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in Srinagar areas today.
Besides, the mobile internet speed was also reduced to 2G while as train services were also suspended as security reasons.
Meanwhile, a police officer told KNS that situation across the Valley remained peaceful throughout the day.
Moreover, a complete shutdown was also observed in highway town of Banihal against the arrests in Kashmir.
Reports said all the shops and businesses establishments remained closed in response to the JRL call against the mass arrests from Friday evening.
Kashmir on Saturday went into a state of chaos soon after rumours about the scrapping of Article 35-A and safety of top separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah spread across the nook and corner of Kashmir valley and arrival of 100 companies of central forces gripped panic in valley.
As reported already the arrest of JKLF chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr Mohammad Fayaz and a dozens of Jamaat activists on Saturday trigerred clashes in several parts of Srinagar city and other parts of Kashmir Valley. The arrests of Yasin Malik and Jamaat cadres evoked serious criticism and condemnation from both separatist and mainstream leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, PC chairman Sajad Gani Lone, PDF chairman Hakim Mohammad Yaseen, CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami and DPN president Ghulam Hassan Mir.
