‘Plant man’ of Kashmir is no more

Srinagar, May 24 (KNS): Well-known plant taxonomist Dr. A. R. Naqshi, former faculty at the Department of Botany, University of Kashmir passed away after brief illness on Wednesday.
According to KNS, Dr.Naqshi famously known as 'plant man' of Kashmir has immensely contributed in the scientific documentation of floral wealth of J&K state.
During his active service, spanning more than three decades, Dr. Naqshi had undertaken botanical exploration across the entire state including far-flung areas of Gurez, Nubra, Zanskar and other such areas.
Dr. Naqshi has been the pioneer in the establishment of internationally recognized KASH herbarium-a rich repository representing floral heritage of the state.
By his death, his colleagues believe that the state has lost the scientist of global stature, whose research contribution in the botanical sciences will remain always immortal.
Paying tributes, Director Ecology and Environment Op Sharma has written a poem in remembrance of Dr Naqshi.
“He trained us in the field of plant identification. His contribution in the field of plant taxonomy will be remembered for ever,” one of his students told KNS. (KNS)
