Indian Army’s Skill Development Center Along LoC Empowers Border Residents in Gurez Valley

Bandipora, Dec 9 (KNS) : The Indian Army’s skill development center at the Youth Centre in Bagtore has been a lifeline for border residents of Gurez Valley for several years. The initiative, led by the Army’s Rana Battalion, focuses on improving the quality of life in one of North Kashmir’s most remote and sensitive regions along the Line of Control.

The center offers six-month training programs in tailoring, crewel work, sozni embroidery and basic computer skills. These courses are helping young people and women build practical skills that can translate into reliable income sources. In Kanzalwan, the Army is also providing livelihood training to local women under the Kishangana Women Empowerment Initiative “Hasmukh Sheen,” where participants learn detergent making. This program has opened new earning avenues for families who already face limited access to markets and employment.

A woman who benefitted from the initiative said her life has changed for the better. She explained that earlier, most women spent their days confined to household work with no opportunities to grow. After joining the Army-run center, she now supports her family financially and feels confident guiding other girls in her village. She said the program has helped women gain confidence and a sense of independence that was missing for generations.

People from the area also said the Indian Army’s steady support has built trust among locals. They praised the battalion for focusing on education, skill development and welfare instead of limiting its role to security. According to them, this long-term commitment has encouraged young people to think positively about their future and look beyond day-to-day struggles.
