Srinagar, Jan 10 (KNS): Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Chairman, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai on Thursday said that India always opposed a third party mediation or international interference on Kashmir issue.
“India always opposed a third party mediation or international interference on Kashmir issue because India has never really been sure that the world community by and large, accepts the legitimacy of its control over Kashmir and that Kashmir being its integral part,” Sehrai said in a statement issued to KNS.
“The Norwegian PM's mediation offer on Kashmir issue clearly indicated that world doesn't subscribes to India’s claim over Kashmir and New Delhi worries that the mediator would impose a solution to Kashmir issue not to its liking,” he added.
Describing Kashmir as "a flash point" between India and Pakistan, Sehrai while appealing the international community to interfere asked them to take cognizance of the current situation in Kashmir Valley.
“There is a need for the international meditation to press India to stop the ongoing human rights violations and to resolve the Kashmir issue as per the relevant UNSC resolutions,” he said, adding that “in that scenario, we welcome any international intervention in Kashmir and the recent UN report on Kashmir has taken the lid off the gory cases of rights abuses and direct intervention of world bodies has now become inevitable.”
“It was unfortunate that New Delhi instead of accepting the ground realities and acknowledging the basic political aspirations of people of Kashmir is handling the issue militarily and with brute force which is fraught with dangerous repercussions. India needs to solve the Kashmir issue, sooner the better. Since attempts to solve it bilaterally with Pakistan has not yielded any result for last seventy years, the attention should move to take principle party Kashmiris on board & one of them certainly is a international mediation,” he added.
“Kashmir dispute has historical background and context which can’t be ignored and dealing with it militarily and adopting iron-fist policy is not going to break the resolve of the people of Kashmir. It would rather further strengthen their commitment towards their cause. It is a political and a human issue, based on the principle of the right to self-determination,” he said. (KNS)
