India-Pakistan Match in WCL Called Off After Backlash

New Delhi, July 20 (KNS): The organisers of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) have officially cancelled the India-Pakistan match, citing hurt sentiments and growing concerns from players and fans. The decision comes after several Indian cricketers and one of the event’s main sponsors withdrew support for the high-profile fixture.

In a statement, the WCL said the India-Pakistan match was planned after a recent volleyball game between the two nations, hoping to create joyful memories for fans. However, the organisers admitted that the move may have unintentionally hurt the feelings of many and caused discomfort to Indian legends. “We sincerely apologise for hurting sentiments,” the statement read.

Former Indian players including Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan had already announced they would not participate in the match. Dhawan even shared an email dated May 11, sent to the organisers, where he had clearly communicated his decision. “Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota,” Dhawan posted on X, reaffirming his stand.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Sources say other members of the Indian team had also chosen not to play against Pakistan, leading to further pressure on the organisers.

Adding to the response, WCL sponsor EaseMyTrip issued a clear statement saying it will not be part of any match involving Pakistan. The travel-tech company said that despite signing a five-year sponsorship deal with WCL two years ago, its position has always been firm. “We do not support or promote any match that includes Pakistan,” the company stated on Sunday.

EaseMyTrip also reaffirmed its support for Team India and expressed hope that the cup will return home. “Bharat First. Always,” the company wrote in its post on X.

The World Championship of Legends is scheduled to take place from July 18 to August 2 across Birmingham and Northampton in the UK. The India-Pakistan game, however, will no longer be part of the tournament schedule.(KNS)
