25 PDD transformers damaged during unrest

Srinagar, Oct 22 (KNS): At least 25 electric transformers have been damaged allegedly by the forces during clashes in Srinagar district in the past three months.
These PDD transformers, however, were repaired by the authorities and are presently functional.
One of the officials, wishing anonymity, said the forces “intentionally attacked the transformers with bullets and tear gas shells.”
Three PDD transformers were damaged in Tengpora Batamaloo.
Locals of Tengpora told KNS that the area has been following the programmes of joint residence leadership in letter and spirit.
“It irritated the forces and they apart from firing bullets, pellets and teargas shells on peaceful protestors doesn’t spare even PDD transforms,” said Yasir Ahmad, a local.
He added that youth had blocked all entry and exit points of the locality to prevent entry of forces in the area. “As they failed to found any human being to fire upon, they chose PDD transformers as a target,” he said.
Locals alleged that it was one of the tactics by the forces to “spread terror and increase trouble of local population.”
One of the officials of PDD said that amid challenging situation in the Srinagar, the Power Development Department (PDD) has been working round the clock to ensure there is no disruption of electricity supply to the people in general and the essential services like hospitals in particular.
He informed that field staff had to face tough time while delivering their official duties. “It was not easy to send a men and machinery in any locality vehicle during the uprising. We managed it somehow,” he said.
“Twenty five transformers were damaged in forces action and we successfully repaired them all. Presently, they all are functional,” he informed. (KNS)
