Says move amounts to violation of basic democratic principles

Srinagar, Feb 17 (KNS): Expressing serious concern over the frequent imposition of curfew and restrictions in downtown Srinagar and caging entire population of the area without any proper justification, Hurriyat Conference (M) on Saturday said that the move amounts to violation of basic democratic principles.
In a statement issued to KNS, the spokesman said just after a single incident anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir, government wastes no time in imposing curbs in downtown and confining people in their homes without worrying for the basic rights of people living in downtown, Srinagar.
Taking a dig at the ruling dispensation, the spokesman said that beyond imposition of toughest curbs in downtown, the government has developed a habit of placing the the amalgam chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house detention.
He said it was only after 13 days of continuous house confinement that Mirwaiz was allowed to address the Friday gathering at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar and soon after his return; he was yet again placed under house detention. He said this reflects the autocratic mindset of those at the helm.
The spokesman also condemned the re-arrest of Hurriyat leader Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, stating that Waza too is being subjected to ‘political vendetta’ as caging him either in police station Sherbagh, Islamabad, Anantnag, which is highly undemocratic.
Meanwhile, spokesman has expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of Kashmir’s prominent trade union leader Haji Bashir Ahmed Ganai and said that the deceased remained steadfast throughout his life towards the Kashmir’s struggle.
To condole the sad demise, Mirwaiz spoke to the son of deceased, Dr Shahid Iqbal, over phone and expressed sympathy and solidarity.
Mirwaiz also prayed for the highest standards in Janah for the deceased. (KNS)
