Government fails to address winter woes of people: NC

Decries unavailability of essential items and absence of basic amenities in south Kashmir Districts

Srinagar, 21 January 21, 2020: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference(JKNC) on Tuesday put the government in a spot over its failure in handling the crisis like situation following fresh snowfall in Kashmir, saying south Kashmir districts have taken a major hit in terms of unavailability of essential items and absence of basic amenities, a statement issued by JKNC reads.

Party’s provincial Spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar while expressing concern over the difficulties faced by people of south Kashmir said, “The long and unscheduled power cuts have aggravated the woes of people who are finding it hard to brave ongoing winter chill with meager facilities at their disposal. The power department is not following its own duly published schedule.  Nothing substantial was done during previous years to augment the existing electricity infrastructure there.  The long and unscheduled power cuts have enraged consumers. The locals are brewing up with anger; the elderly, the student fraternity are primarily at the receiving end of all this. Officials when contacted by locals even don’t head to pick phone calls. Who is then going to provide succor to masses? The concerned department is not sticking to its own publicized schedule regarding power cuts. Households only get few hours of electricity.”

Taking exception to the lackadaisical approach of the administration towards extenuating the problems of people following recent snowfall Imran said, “No satisfactory measures are being undertaken to clear snow from major roads of south Kashmir areas. Majority of internal alleys and other routes connecting major townships to inner alleys are still snowed under heaps of snow. People haven’t sighted any field staffer on ground in their alley and streets. Nothing is being done to repair damaged transformers. Prices of household commodities are sky rocketing. There are no flying squads on grounds to check price rise. The normal life is out spin with no semblance of good governance on ground,”

Imran said resumption of connectivity is the main issue that has to be tackled on priority basis. “Every times it snows; it takes days together to resume connectivity to all snow bound areas. Moreover the administration seems to have no contingency plan to meet any such eventualities as road blockages, paucity of LPG, Kerosene oil and other household merchandise. People living in these areas are yet to overcome from the losses of previous snowfalls of undergoing winter season, not to speak of the recent one.”

He further added that the horticulture basket of south Kashmir is facing a major slump, “the vagaries of weather coupled with ongoing situation have rendered the sector dysfunctional.   The farmers associated with paddy and other allied agriculture activities are also ruing government’s inaction towards resolving their woes.”

He said government cannot shy away from its responsibilities, “government is duty bound to provide succor to people. Far from improving its institutional efficacy, the local administration has again been caught napping to our disappointment.”
