Geelani expresses concern over India, Pak tension on LoC

Sought UN intervention in addressing the Kashmir issue

Srinagar, Feb 26 (KNS): Syed Ali Geelani has expressed serious concern over the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan due to the rising incidents of cross-Line of Control firing. Geelani termed the ongoing assault along the LoC as a deliberate attempt of India to draw attention away from the Kashmir issue and mislead its own population about it.
In a statement issued to KNS, Syed Ali Geelani has sought UN intervention in addressing the Kashmir issue, saying it is the main reason for prevailing tensions along border.
Geelani stressed upon the leadership of both the countries to exhibit political maturity, saying Pakistan has a right to defend its territory from Indian aggression, however keeping in view the loss of precious lives, appealed to observe restraint and patience.
Geelani stated that the main cause of tension between the two countries is the pending Kashmir dispute and it is due to this lingering dispute that both the countries have fought wars. Geelani stated that the unresolved Kashmir dispute has created insecurity and instability in the entire South Asia. “UN should press India to stop human rights violations in Kashmir and stress to resolve Kashmir as per the UN resolutions,” Geelani said.
Blaming Indian leadership for their haughty and stubborn attitude, Geelani said that India instead of taking care of its starving population has started a mad race for arms and ammunitions endangering whole region, saying “war is no option, instead causes devastation and destruction as both India and Pakistan are nuclear countries. Any flare up can prove extremely detrimental,” said Geelani, in the statement.
India is trying to maintain status quo, said he and blaming New Delhi for misleading its people, Geelani said that loss of precious lives on both sides of borders is painful and heart wrenching, saying the main victims of the cross-border firing were often innocent people living along the line of divide on both sides.
Geelani in his statement stressed UN authorities to take serious notice of deteriorating situation in occupied Jammu and Kashmir and added that “delaying resolution of Kashmir issue is a basic reason for the prevailing tension between India and Pakistan. If UN helps in resolving the dispute in accordance with the wishes of its people, as per its historical perspective, it will be a great service towards saving this region from a destructive war and devastations, and will provide a peaceful atmosphere to millions of people living in sub-continent, added Geelani.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat Conference chairman, Syed Ali Geelani has strongly condemned the arrest and detention of its party general secretary Gh Nabi Sumji, who was placed under house arrest on Monday by police station Bijbahara.
Laying curbs and denying political space tantamount to violation of human rights, said Geelani.
Blaming state government for indulging in politics of intolerance, Geelani said “state government has been muzzling all voice of dissent and trampling the rights of the resistance leadership by disallowing them to carry their peaceful political activities and while lashing at authorities, Geelani added that autocratic and unethical attitude of authorities is unacceptable.
