Bandipora, Apr 19 (KNS): The Bandipora district of northern Kashmir is witnessing ruthless deforestation as timber mafias are active in cutting prized Deodar and Kail trees in the forests.

Local sources told KNS that timber smuggling is going on unabated at Aloosa, Ashtingoo, Watapora, Binilpora, and its adjoining areas with concerned authorities turning blind eye towards the matter. Sources added that heavy damage is caused by the smugglers to the green treasure in forest range Khuehami including compartment number 7, 8, 9.

Locals of these areas alleged that a nexus between forest officials and Timber smugglers is the source of erasing green wealth. They alleged that the department has all information but they failed to take action against the culprits and giving them free hand to earn illegal money. Locals from Aloosa and its adjoining areas told that, in Compartment of 7, 8,9 of Khuehama range, employees of the forest department are favoring them and the green gold of the area is facing axe.

Local sources added that though raids are being conducted by forest officials, but surprisingly the accused are being released and no action is being taken against accused. They further added that timber mafias are smuggling forest logs and selling them in the nearby areas of the district in a broad daylight.

According to locals, smugglers fell green trees, particularly during night hours, after they are burning their roots to protect themselves for evidences and carry the Timber in Tata Mobiles for commercial purposes, also cross the several villages for sale.

When contacted DFO Bandipora Shabir Ahmad in this regard, he refuted the allegation levelled by the locals. He said that he will look after the matter. He further said that if proven guilty strict action will be taken against the accused employees. (KNS)
