Workers threaten stir if payments not paid before Eid

Langate, Aug 17 (KNS): Though the government claims to have deeper concerns on addressing the issue of joblessness in rural areas but the payments left unpaid to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act (MGNREGA) workers in Langate area of Kupwara district disputes the very claim of the government.
MGNREGA workers of the Mawer block of Langate constituency of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district denied payment of the construction material they have used for developmental works have threatened protests on the day of Eid-ul-Adha if the authorities fail to pay the pending payments before Eid.
A legion of aggrieved MGNREGA workers while narrating their woeful tale to KNS correspondent in Langate said that they have been denied payments on the eve of last three consecutive Eids and if authorities don’t pay the pending payments this time they will hit streets and protest against the nonpayment of pending dues on the day of Eid-ul-Adha. Despite government claims that pending payments are cleared before the Eid to employees, contractors, casual labours and daily rated workers, the payments are being denied to MGNREGA workers in Mawer block of Langate constituency.
