Throws light on Juvenile Justice Act, responsibilities of the SJPUs

Srinagar, Aug 24 (KNS): Ahead of 2nd State level Round Table Conference on “Implementation of Juvenile Justice System” at Srinagar, Director General of Police (DGP) Dr. S.P Vaid inaugurated workshop on juvenile justice at PHQ here today. The workshop was attended by Officers In-charge Special Juvenile Police Units(SJPUs) of all districts of the state.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Vaid threw light on the Juvenile Justice Act and the responsibilities of the SJPUs. He emphasized for adopting a child-friendly approach while dealing with juveniles in conflict with law. DGP asked the In-charge SJPUs to remain in contact with the members of the Juvenile Justice Board and the Child Welfare committees which have been set up in each district of the State. He stated that child friendly Police Stations have been set up in district Srinagar (P.S Harwan) and district Jammu (Women P.S Gandhinagar). He directed that all other In-charges of SJPUs must take the help of District Ss P and set up at least one child friendly police station in each district on the pattern of Jammu and Srinagar.
DGP directed them to hold regular meetings of Juvenile J&K Police officers of respective police stations in their jurisdiction and guide them in regard to the J&K Juvenile Justice Act/ Rules.
Special DG PHQ V.K Singh, who is the Nodal Officer of J&K Police and member of the State Juvenile Justice Committee, discussed with the participants the infrastructure and other facilities being provided at SJPUs.
Joint Director Prosecution PHQ Gowhar Hussain, AIG CIV PHQ Abdul Qayoom and other officers were present at the inaugural session.
In the second session the participants were briefed about different sections of J&K Juvenile Justice Act-2013 and Juvenile Justice Rules-2014 by Joint Director Prosecution PHQ. (KNS)
