DAY 80: Traffic movement improves, shops remain closed in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 23 (KNS): The situation in the Valley has witnessed a bit improvement in terms of movement of traffic in Srinagar and other districts as well but the spontaneous shutdown in Kashmir continued for the 80th straight day.

The spontaneous shutdown is being observed against the repealing of special status of Jammu and Kashmir (Article 370) and bifurcation of erstwhile State into two Union Territories on August 05. The decision will be implemented on October 31.

All the shops as well as other business establishments remained closed for the 80th straight day in Kashmir while the street vendors continued to install their stalls on the roadsides from TRC to Batamaloo road stretch here.

Some of the shops across Srinagar remained open for few hours in the morning but remained closed throughout the day, witnesses told Kashmir News Service (KNS).

They said that the private traffic witnessed surge in Srinagar and other districts while traffic mess was witnessed at few places as well.

However, the public transport continued to remain off the roads, causing hardships to the people.

It is worth to mention here that Old Habba Kadal Bridge continued to remain closed for the vehicular as well as pedestrians movement since August 05. Witnesses said that the forces have erected concertina wire on the road on August 05 and didn’t remove yet, thus halting the vehicular as well as pedestrians movement.

Notably, the prepaid mobile services as well as the internet services both broadband and mobile remained suspended across since August 05. The services as per the officials have been suspended to maintain law and order.

Moreover, the train services from Baramulla to Banihal also remained suspended for 80th successive day in Kashmir. Reports however said that the railway has suffered over 230 crore losses in Kashmir due to the continuous suspension of the services from August 05, 2019. (KNS)
