Amid shutdown, phase-II of LS polls for South Kashmir constituency culminates

Srinagar, Apr 29 (KNS): Amid complete shutdown in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, the second phase of three phased Lok Sabha elections for South Kashmir constituency culminated on Monday with recording 09.98 per cent total voter turnout.

The polling started at 07:00am and ended at 04:00 PM today. The district wore a deserted look throughout the day with forces manning the roads, keeping close vigil to ensure smooth conduct of polls.

The total voter turnout was recorded 9.98 percent with over 34000 voters exercising their franchise today.

Notably, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) had called for a complete poll boycott, appealing people to stay away from the polls.

The four assembly segments including Noorabad, Devsar, Kulgam and Home Shalibugh as per KNS Correspondent recorded 20.5%, 16.84%, 2.38% and 1.13% total voter turnout respectively.

In Noorabad, 15842 votes were cast while as 15292 votes were polled in Devsar. In Kulgam, 2333 electorates cast ballots while 893 people voted in Home Shalibugh.

In the district as per KNS Correspondent, 34357 votes were polled.

Earlier, in the first leg of the South Kashmir polls, 13.61 percent votes were polled in Anantnag district.

Reports of clashes were also reported from many areas today during which forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth who were pelting stones on them.

Meanwhile, a senior police official said that the situation remained by and large peaceful and under control throughout the day. (KNS)
