Need to establish Centres of Excellence in Universities: Experts

Srinagar, Oct 12 (KNS): A three Day workshop on“ Research Methodology in Social Sciences & Humanities” which was organized at Islamic University of Science and Technology by Department of Islamic Studies and Department of Arabic Language and Literature from 10th-12th, October, 2017 concluded here today.
During the valedictory session various speakers and experts unanimously impressed upon the role played by such workshops in orienting researchers towards research and contributing to future studies and also suggested for establishing the specialized centers of excellence in universities like IUST for furthering qualitative research in different fields of knowledge. The participants also talked about the usefulness of such events and how such programs can hone the research acumen not only among researchers and teachers but the students of the varsity as well.
Eminent Professors and experts from various universities including Director Department of Islamic Studies AMU Dr. Obaidullah Fahad, Head Department of Religious Studies JMI Prof. Habibullah Khan, Professor Department of English, AMU Prof. A. R. Kidwai, Professor Department of Arabic AMU Prof. Sanaullah Nadvi, Head Department of ReligiousStudiesCentral University of Kashmir Prof. H. N. Rafiabadi, Director Centre for Central Asian .Studies KU, Prof G. N. Khaki, renowned economist of the valley Prof. Nisar Ali, Head Department of Islamic Studies KU Prof. A. R. Bhat Professor Department of Arabic University of Delhi Prof. Wali Akhtar, Professor Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Hamdard, Prof. Ishtiaq Danish and others conducted important sessions in the workshop which was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor IUST Prof. Mushtaq A. Siddiqi and attended by academicians and researchers from various universities from within and outside state.
A live Skype lecture from Prof. Jonathan Brown, Georgetown University, USA who spoke on “Challenges to Hadith Methodology in Contemporary times” and discussed the challenges posed by western episteme and the rising tide of Orientalism was also organised.
Spread over three days and multiple technical sessions, the workshop dealt with some major themes during these sessions including “Recent Trends in Islamic Research: Some Methodological Issues,” “Research Methodology in Islamic Studies,”“Research Methodology in Arabic,”“Perspectives of Research in Quranic Studies,” “Semiotic and the Argumentative in the post-modern approach to Research in Humanities and Languages,”“Arabic Translation: Theoretical Aspects,”“Research Methodology in Islamic Perspective with reference to Islamic History” and “Academic Writing”.
During the valediction Registrar IUST, Prof. Reyaz Rufai appreciated and congratulated both the departments for organizing the workshop successfully. Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Mushtaq A. Qurishi expressed his views on the growing importance of establishing and promoting social sciences and humanities departments in technological educational institutions to create a balance between ‘science and tradition’. Dr. Arif Qazi, Head Department of Arabic presented the vote of thanks on this occasion. Also present were various Head Department of Islamic Studies Dr. Afroz Bisati Head Department of Arabic Language and Literature Dr. Arif Qazi, Workshop Coordinator Dr. Showkat Hussain, Deans, Heads of departments, faculty members, research scholars and participants.
