‘Mother’s love prevailed’, choice to surrender not an easy step: CM Mehbooba

Srinagar, Nov 17 (KNS): A footballer from Anantnag town, Majid Khan, who joined the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba a week ago, Friday, laid down his arms, after a tearful video appeal of his mother had gone viral on social media urging the 20-year-old to quit militancy and return home.
A tearful video appeal by Majid's mother Ashiya Begum had gone viral on social media and thousands had urged Khan to return home and look after his parents who needed him the most.
"I am waiting for him. I want him to return... I want him to play football again," his mother wept in the video.
However, on Friday morning reports said that Majid Khan surrendered before the Army, but the Inspector General of Police Muneer Khan later said he had contacted his family expressing a wish to return home.
Reports said that Khan surrendered before 1RR of army under 1 sector Khanabal last night around 10:30 pm. He was later handed over to Victor Force, based in Awantipora.
As soon the news about his surrender broke, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti tweeted: "A mother’s love prevailed. Her impassioned appeal helped in getting Majid, an aspiring footballer back home. Every time a youngster resorts to violence, it is his family which suffers the most," tweeted Mehbooba.
In another tweet, Mehbooba said, "I understand the predicament of young boys who have strayed into militancy. Most realise the futility of senseless violence & want to return home and live normal lives with dignity."
Mehbooba said the choice to return homes for the young militants "is not easy one" because of the social stigma attached to "surrender."
"But the choice to renounce violence is not an easy one and they find themselves between the devil and the deep blue sea. The fear of social stigma clouds their judgement," she wrote in successive tweet. (KNS)
